Clashes between two local tribes in Baghdad left six people dead, including four policemen, Iraq’s Interior Ministry confirmed on Sunday. The fighting broke out late Saturday in the Saada area of the capital, reportedly sparked by a dispute over rising fees for a private power generator. Most Iraqis rely on such generators to cope with frequent blackouts.
Police officers intervened to stop the violence but came under fire. Four officers, including two commanders, were killed, while nine others were injured. Two of the slain officers died later from their wounds, officials said. Security forces returned fire, killing two people involved in the clashes, while five others were wounded and several arrested.
The ministry condemned the attack, noting that tribal disputes often escalate into deadly confrontations in Iraq, where heavily armed tribes continue to hold significant influence. Separately, in Karbala, two people were killed and at least six injured when a bridge under construction collapsed on the Karbala-Baghdad road. Rescue teams worked through the night to free trapped victims.
All the injured were taken to the nearest hospital in Karbala, a city frequently visited by Shiite pilgrims from abroad for its holy shrines. A health official, who requested anonymity, said the collapse occurred when the bridge’s supporting pillars gave way as several vehicles were passing beneath it.
